Scrappy Pinwheel

(Always use a 1/4” seam allowance when sewing.)

Materials Needed: Red, white and blue fabrics

Cut the white fabrics: cut 6 strips 1 1/2” x 3 1/2”, cut 2 strips 1 1/2” x 6 1/2”, cut 2 strips 1 1/2” x 8 1/2”.

Cut the red and blue fabrics: cut 6 strips 1 1/2” x 3 1/2”

Sewing: sew the 6 1/2” strips together into sets of 3 as shown. Press the seams.

Cut the strip sets: using a 45 degree ruler, cut each strip set on the diagonal as shown. (See the ruler HERE)

Sewing: Arrange the triangles as shown, sew along the long side. Press the seams open. Trim to 3 1/2” square if needed.

Assemble the Block: Sew the squares together 4 patch style. (Sew the top 2 squares together, repeat with the bottom 2 squares, then sew the top row to the bottom row.) Trim to 6 1/2” square if needed. Pinwheel press the block as shown above.

Add the Borders: Sew the 6 1/2” strips to opposite sides of the pinwheel. Press toward the strips. Sew the 8 1/2” strips to the remaining two sides. Press toward the strips. Trim the block to 8 1/2” if needed. Press the block.

Turn this block into a little mug rug or make lots for whole quilt!
