Multiplicity
Every time I prepare to teach this class, I fall in love with this quilt all over again! It started out as a way to use up a whole bunch of fabrics that were calling to me from my stash and the feeling that I wanted to make a variation on the “x+” quilts that had been floating around for a while. I wanted to add another element to it to make the intersections of where the blocks join just a bit more interesting. I played around with pencil and paper, then continued the ideas on EQ8. But for me, things don’t really come to life until the fabric is involved.
Once I realized how easy it would be to make 5 sided shapes from strips and squares, meaning no templates needed, and I could cut and sew multiples at once, there was no turning back! I have been making most of my quilts using strips and squares (even if it’s just to pre-cut for paper piecing) so I look at the finished design and work my way back to the sewing process, then decide how the cutting can most efficiently provide what I need. I’ve always been a bit backwards! LOL
And the name for this quilt presented itself in the form of a TED talk. The idea that often one object is simple, but joy can be achieved with many, just seemed so appropriate to a block that in it’s original form, referred to math symbols of addition and multiplication. I hope that this quilt brings you some of the joy it has given me!
