Daisy Mug Rug
This little mug rug was so fun and easy! It’s a mix of techniques and stitches but none of them are difficult.
Materials Needed:
Background fabric 8” x 10”
Batting scrap 8” x 10”
Backing fabric 8” x 10”
Scraps of green and bright colors for flowers
fusible (steam a seam light 2)
circle cutter (accuquilt GO!)
very sharp fine point scissors (Karen Kay Buckley)
thread (shades of green, blue and white)
binding fabric strip
Layer the backing, batting and background fabrics.
Fuse the scraps of green and bright colors according to the package directions.
Rotary cut the fused green fabrics into thin strips approximately 1/4 - 1/2” x 3-5”.
Using the circle cutter, or templates, cut the circles 1’’ and 2”.
Using the fine point scissors, snip slices out of the larger circles, taking care not to cut all the way to the center of the circle. Once the slices are cut out, the circle will look like petals of the flower once the smaller circle is layered on top of it.
Arrange the stems and circles on the background fabric and fuse according to package directions.
Once all of the flowers are in place, add a butterfly if you choose ( I cut 2 heart shapes and overlapped them pointing in opposite directions.)
Machine quilt the layers together using a cross hatch design. I quilted using the side of the presser foot as my guide. I quilted a grid of light blue thread, then another grid of white thread to fill. The idea is to have all of the small pieces quilted down securely.
Thread paint the grass using free motion back and forth stitching, switching several shades of green thread.
Add a tiny zig zag stitch to create the butterfly body.
Trim the edges even and add the binding.
Enjoy every stitch! Diane
