Scrap Quilting 101
Teaching quilters is so rewarding because it’s more than just sharing skills and tips and tricks. Often, I find the most important thing I can do is encourage quilters to find the confidence they don’t know they already have. Skills are essential, but having the courage to make the choices that make you happy can be elusive. Here are some of the ideas I use to encourage my quilting friends…
As long as you like it, then it’s perfect!
Don’t get caught up in what everyone else is doing or making. If you like something a little different or not on trend, then that’s what you should make! How boring would it be if we all made the same thing all the time.
We were all beginners once.
Every single one of us! Don’t compare your first quilt to someone else’s 100th quilt. It is a waste of perfectly good time and effort. If you are enjoying the process and having fun playing with fabric then you are winning! Be proud of everything you learn from each quilt.
Make quilts that make you happy.
Not every quilt needs to be a gift for someone special or match the sofa. Quilting can be just for the joy of the process and the relaxation of stitching! Not every quilt needs a purpose or an excuse, quilt what makes you feel good.
Let every quilt be a lesson.
Each quilt you make is a chance to learn a technique or tip. The lessons will add up to confidence over time. Be patient with yourself knowing that each quilt is giving you experience and skills.
Get inspired!
Be aware of all the inspiration around you. Color combinations in nature, geometric designs in tile work, the smallest of details can inspire a design or project. Keep a journal of the things that inspire you and refer back to it often.
Make quilting friends!
Nothing is more encouraging for the future quilter inside you, than finding friends who love the same things. Is there a local quilt guild? Can you find quilting classes at a shop or senior center? Is there an online group that feels like a good fit for you? Once you find your tribe, you will be amazed at how much support and encouragement you will share. Quilting friends really are the best friends!
Don’t be discouraged.
Everyone has a different quilting path to take, another reason to love this beautiful craft! If someone else doesn’t understand your choices, or is openly critical of your work, remember it’s a reflection on their attitude, not yours! Being open to learning from others is great, letting others discourage you is none of your business! Cultivate your own course and know that it’s going to be a wonderful journey full of discovery!
Take classes and workshops!
I’ve learned something in every class I’ve taken (even if it’s to learn that I don’t want try that again! LOL) Workshops teach so many techniques, and project steps, but the tips and tricks along the way are the most valuable of all. It’s just like cooking, you know the recipe, but the tips for adding a little spice or avoiding mistakes are so important. Quilting can be made so much easier with some tips and tricks tucked into your toolbelt.
Most of all, I want to remind each quilter that there is no “Quilt Police” and this experience including the design, the technique, the method, the pace…it’s all up to you. Do what works best for you and make the choices that bring you joy.
Enjoy every stitch! Diane
